Music at Upland High School

The instrumental music program at Upland High School offers a variety of opportunities for students to participate in music education and performance on an individual, small-group, and large-group basis. Our nationally-recognized young musicians balance a strong sense of family and community with dedication to the goals of the program.

The focus of first semester is the Upland Highland Regiment, which offers both band and color guard to interested students. The season begins with a week of new member clinics in June and Band Camp in mid-August. Students spend numerous hours preparing a field show for competition at regional tournaments as well as for half-time performances at UHS home football games. This year the Regiment had another highly successful season and competed in the Western Band Association Championships in Long Beach and the Bands of Ameria Regionals in Long Beach, California and Flagstaff, Arizona.

Second semester the focus shifts to small group performance and competition. Students may select classes in beginning/intermediate jazz performance with the Stage Band or they may choose to improve their skills in the Concert and Symphonic Bands. Advanced students may audition for the Jazz and Wind Ensembles. There are also audition opportunities for participation in the Bag Pipe Band and Drum Line. Color Guard students may audition for our award winning Winter Guard.

Through the instrumental music program students have the opportunity to be involved in such campus activities as football games, pep rallies, and school assemblies. The Regiment is a colorful addition to such community events as the City of Ontario Fourth of July Parade and City of Upland Christmas Parade.

Students have many opportunities to participate in social activities within the program throughout the year. The Upland Highland Regiment Boosters, the parent volunteer organization, hosts an awards banquet and dance at the end of each semester, as well as an August Band Camp Dinner and Performance, pizza and movie nights, and other social activities.

Travel is also a part of the music program. Our students have performed at Australia's Sydney Opera House, the National Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington, D.C., and the National Concert Bands Festival in Indianapolis.

Our students are encouraged to audition for honor bands. Upland High School students have been successful in auditions with the San Bernardino County Honor Band, All Southern-California Honor Jazz Band/All Stars, All Southern-California Honor Band and Orchestra, and Tournament of Roses Honor Band.

We look forward to welcoming you to Upland High School's award-winning instrumental music program.
